چکیده

MEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS, found mainly in fish oils, are said to be beneficial in conditions from Alzheimer disease to Zellweger syndrome. Much of the evidence is circumstantial and indirect, so if and how to use them is still open to question. We do however have solid and compelling evidence that two longchain omega-3 fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—help prevent coronary heart disease. What follows is a series of answers to questions physicians and their patients are asking about fish oil. In this article, I discuss mainly EPA and DHA fish oils.

Bioequivalence of encapsulated and microencapsulated fish-oil supplementation

Omega-3 oil from fish can be stabilised against oxidation using a variety of microencapsulation technologies. Complex coacervation has been used and found to be commercially useful for fortifying foods and beverages with long-chain omega-3 containing oils. Here we report a comparative human bioavailability study of microencapsulated omega-3 fish oil and standard fish-oil soft-gel capsules. Phos...

Effects of omega-3 fatty acids on serum markers of cardiovascular disease risk: a systematic review.

Greater fish oil consumption has been associated with reduced CVD risk, although the mechanisms are unclear. Plant-source oil omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) have also been studied regarding their cardiovascular effect. We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of consumption of fish oil and ALA on commonly measured serum CVD risk factors, performing m...

Effect of randomized supplementation with high dose olive, flax or fish oil on serum phospholipid fatty acid levels in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids has been positively correlated with cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric health in several studies. The high seafood intake by the Japanese and Greenland Inuit has resulted in low ratios of the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), with the Japanese showing AA:EPA ratios of approximately 1.7 and the Greenl...
